Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability
The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
